Divert CSS xhtml layouts
Every website, whether it's one page or 10,000 pages, needs a good foundation. Although designing nice looking websites is important to Divert, it's just as important that our sites are structurally marked up using HTML/XHTML. Furthermore, our code is not only structurally sound, the markup is semantically written. In simplified terms, every tag is carefully considered based upon its meaning and not how it will look.
Sticking with our analogy of the foundation, every building has a distinct appeal to it. So does every website. We use CSS to create the "clothing" - the distinct look and feel. But we not only use CSS to establish the design, we use it to control how each element relates to other elements - a distinction that often isn't talked about.
Developing websites using validated XHTML and CSS offers many advantages over existing coding methods. Not only does it provide a better user experience but it also offers many advantages to both the designer and the client.
Implementing standard compliant markup can eliminate the use of deeply nested tables, bandwidth sucking tags, and other unnecessary complex markup. On many occasions, using cascading style sheets for presentation of web pages can considerably cut file sizes. In our experience, the re-design of a site using CSS for layout and text formatting, achieved a file size reduction of 95%. For high traffic sites, the impact of reducing file sizes can only mean one thing, vast savings. Every byte that is wasted on inefficient markup, costs site owners astronomical amounts of money every year. If by implementing validated CSS you can reduce file sizes by an average of 50%, the only consequence will be a 50% reduction on annual bandwidth costs.
Website creation steps
- Review the design and functional requirements for potential problems.
- Break the design down into modular page building blocks, or panes.
- Create a model for capturing the data as either XML or database records.
- Use XHTML for page result/presentation.
- Move as much of the presentation styling to a central standard style sheet as possible.
- Use automated procedures to build content elements.
